i SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 474,719, dated May 10, 1892.
Application led February 24, 1892. Serial No. 422,699. (No model.)
ing or holding small articles of various kinds,
such as documents, garments, and the like.
The invention has for its object to provide a device that will not only firmly hold the articles, but also affordincreased security against unintentional disengagement from the clamping device, this being effected by the weight of the clamped articles themselves. The manner in which this object is attained by this invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings.
Figure l is a side elevation of the device half open. Fig. 2 is also aside elevation, but closed. Fig. 3 shows the devicein side elevation fully open. Fig. 4 is a front elevation, one jaw being partly broken away; and Fig. 5 is a cross-section on line a b in Fig. l.
The improved clamp comprises two broad clamping-jaws f f, which are pivoted together by a pivot-pin s. which passes transversely through ears f f2, formed on the opposing jawsfintermediate their ends, the earsf on one jaw being received between the corresponding ears f2 on the opposite jaw, as best shown in Fig. 5. A coiled springg on the pin s serves to normally press the lower clamping ends of the jaws together. At the upper ends the jaws are formed with inclinedslots k c, produced in ears f3, and a pin 7i., formed on thelower end of ahangere, passesthrough Ithe oppositely-ranging slots 7c 7c of the respective jaws, said hanger being formed with an eye or loop c for suspending the complete device from any suitable fixed hook or the like. Asthejaws are suspended from the pin h, it is evident that their tendency is to close, owing to the slots 7o 7c', and this tendency is increased in proportion to the weightof the garments or other articles clamped thereon, and in this way the articles suspended `increase the clarnping effect of the jaws. Pins or spurs il or their equivalents are formed or secured to the inner surface of the jaws for better taking hold of the articles suspended.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
l. A clamping device comprising two pivoted partsf, the lower ends of which are normall y pressed together and whose upper ends are formed With inclined slots, in which works a pin, from which the device is suspended, the arrangement being such that the weight of the articles clamped by the device aids the gripping action of the lower ends of the parts such as described and shown.
2. As a new article of manufacture, aclamp comprising two jaws pivotally connected intermediate of their ends and a hanger having a pin, which projects into inclined slots produced in the upper ends of the jaws, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
