Abstract

382,708. Electric induction furnaces. ELECTRIC FURNACE CO., Ltd., 17, Victoria Street, London.-(Assignees of Northrup, E. F. ; Ajax Park, Trenton, New Jersey, U.S.A.) Sept. 24, 1930. [Class 39 (iii).] In Fig. 1, sheets 11 of copper, which function as resistance and heat distributing plates, are distributed throughout a pile 10 of metal sheets to be annealed. The pile is arranged on a base 13 carried by a car 17 and when in the position shown may be moved vertically into the induction furnace by hydraulic gear 14. The bell 32 is filled with the desired treating gas after the charge is inserted, and finely divided heat insulating material is then introduced through apertures 34 into the space between the edges of the charge and the asbestos lining of the bell. The copper sheets are slotted from one or more edges to increase the path of the secondary current. The edges of the slots may be covered with insulation. In Fig. 8 a pile of slotted cast iron resistance plates 50 are employed. Each plate is formed with apertures 52, 53, 54 which form compartments into which are introduced bundles 55 of metal sheets.
