Abstract

380,272. Safety cut-off valves. EWART, G. and EWART & SON, Ltd., 346, Euston Road, London. Oct. 15, 1931, No. 28683. [Class 135.] A safety cut-off valve for a gas-fired water heater is fitted with means arranged so that when the supply has been cut off it can only be restored after the main gas control valve has been closed and re-opened. In the form shown in the Figure the cut-off valve comprises a lift valve member 10 arranged between a pair of differential diaphragms 13, 14 subject to inlet and outlet pressure respectively. The valve is opened initially by a manual operation of a spring-pressed push-button 17. To retard the closing of the device the chambers above and below the diaphragms communicate with the atmosphere through narrow apertures 20. Access to the push-button is prevented when the main cock 2 is open by a sliding cover 21 mounted on a sliding rod 22 linked to an eccentric pin on a disc 25 secured to the plug of the cock. The cover may be provided with a cam surface adapted to depress the pushbutton when the main cock is closed. The cover may be mounted directly on the plug or operated against the action of a spring by a cam on the plug. The cover may be replaced by a pin or similar member.
