Abstract
378,246. High tension switches. SIEMENS - SCHUCKERTWERKE AKT-. GES., Siemensstadt, Berlin. Sept. 30, 1931, No. 27253. Convention date, Nov. 8, 1930. [Class 38 (v).] In an "expansion" switch wherein the arc is extinguished by the sudden expansion of vapour generated by the arc itself in an expansion chamber filled with liquid, the sudden expansion is provided for automatically by expansion openings in the chamber normally closed by a material of great elasticity, for example rubber. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the openings 14, 15 in the chamber are closed by thick rubber bands 16, 17 which yield when adequate pressure has been developed and permit the sudden expansion. The chamber may be in two parts (divided axially) and held together by rubber bands or, as in Fig. 3, it may be divided transversely with a rubber washer 26 at the joint, the two parts being held together yieldingly by rigid yokes 28 with an inserted rubber buffer 29. Alternatively rubber bands may be arranged around adjacent external studs on the two parts firmly encircled by steel bands to hold the two parts yieldingly together.
