Abstract
391,998. Arc-rupturing in switches. SHEPHERD, G. R., 2, Norfolk Street, Strand, London.-(Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Co. ; East Pittsburg, U.S.A.) June 7, 1932, No. 16109. [Class 38 (v).] In order to direct the arc towards the central portion of the arc horns and prevent it spreading to the underside of the horns, the horns are formed as shown in Fig. 5, of two spaced parallel members 23, 24 joined at their extremity by a cylindrical portion 25. The arc on striking one of the side members as at the point 26, causes the current to divide, one portion flowing to the terminal portion 22 through the adjacent portion of the side member 23 and the other portion flowing through the end portion of the member 23, the cylindrical portion 25 and the side member 24. The interaction of the fluxes of the divided portions of the current with that of the arc itself tends to produce a relatively weaker field strength in the space between the members 23, 24 than on the outside. Thus the arc is caused to travel along the horn on the inner edge of the side members and is directed to the central portion of the cylindrical member 25, where it is extinguished without damage to the surrounding arc shoot.
