Abstract

377,034. High-tension switches. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERTWERKE AKT.- GES., Siemensstadt, Berlin. Oct. 20, 1931, No. 29160. Convention date, Oct. 25, 1930. [Class 38 (v).] The break arc in an A.C. hightension switch is extinguished in a hydrogen atmosphere contained in a closed chamber by extending the arc to a minimum length which, expressed in centimetres, is equal to the 290th part of the recurring voltage at the switch electrodes, expressed in volts. In the construction shown, the fixed electrodes 11, 12 are located in a closed U-tube filled with hydrogen from the container 20. The movable bridging electrodes 16, 17 pass through gastight glands 18, 19 and, in breaking circuit, are withdrawn to the distance t which is at least 1/290th of the recurring voltage between the electrodes 11 and 16, and 12 and 17. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the use of a gas, such as coal gas, in which an hydrogen atmosphere is developed around the arc by the arc itself. Also that the switching action may take place in a liquid hydrocarbon, for example acetone, from which a hydrogen atmosphere is produced by the arc and that oil itself may be used. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
