Abstract

617,805. Arc rupturing in switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 8, 1946, No. 30033. Convention date, Oct. 8, 1945. [Class 38 (v)] An arc extinguishing structure suitable for D.C. arc rectifiers subject. to arc-back, comprises arc runners 15, 16, the discharge ends of which are bent through 180 degrees and enter pockets 26, 25 formed by insulating side plates 9, 10 and insulating spacers 11 ... 14. The spacers 13, 14 are of gas-evolving material so as to produce a high pressure in the pockets to expel arc products therefrom. Arc splitters 27, perforated at 28, are supported over the runners and between the plates 9, 10 by bolts 32, the structure being strengthened by braces 31, 32 and the ends closed by insulating spacers 29. The runners 15, 16 are of iron or steel and are supported by the spacers 11, 12. The whole structure is removably secured to a base 8 and terminal studs 1, 6. Fixed and moving main and arcing contacts 2, 3 and 4, 5 and the runners 15, 16 are connected to the studs 1, 6. Specifications 565,823 and 589,277 are referred to.
