Abstract

373,010. Turbines. FAIRWEATHER, H. G. C., 65, Chancery Lane, London.- (Allmanna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget ; Võsteras, Sweden.) July 27, 1931, No. 21445. [Class 110 (iii).] A turbine plant comprises a main turbine 8 of the radial flow type, for the L.P. stage, and an axial flow H.P. turbine 3 which contains a disc 17 keyed to a shaft 9. Steam pressure difference on the disc causes a thrust on the shaft 9 towards the main turbine and balances the thrust on the disc 18. Two electric generators 7 and a dynamo 21 are driven by the turbines. The turbine 3 may be of the impulse type, reaction type, or a combination of both, and may be connected to the shaft 9 by bevel gearing which transmits the end thrust from the disc 17. Steam from the H.P. turbine flows through a pipe 10 to branches 11, 12, to the centres of turbine discs 18, 23. One branch only may lead to the centre, the other leading to an annular chamber. Annular chambers 13, 14 surround the central space to which steam is admitted through overload valves such as 15, 16 leading to space 13. The end disc 5 of the H.P. turbine may be used in place of the disc 17, but packing elements must be provided on its right-hand side to co-operate with elements on the end wall 19. Several discs 17 may be used. Further auxiliary turbines may be built in the casing of the main turbine, one on each side. A second H.P. turbine 3 may be used in place of the dynamo 21.
