Abstract
379,638. Turbines. AKT.-GES. BROWN, BOVERI, ET CIE, Baden, Switzerland. March 10, 1932, No. 7222. Convention date, March 14, 1931. [Class 110 (iii).] In a steam or gas reaction turbine in which the H.P. stage a and the L.P. stage bare normally balanced by the working fluid in the stages flowing in opposite directions, provision is made to secure axial balance when extra steam is admitted at c, steam is drawn off at d or e, or other load-variation disturbances occur. The turbine is designed such that any unbalanced load occurring moves the shaft in one direction only. In Fig. 1 the shaft when unbalanced moves to the left. Steam passes through a pipe g to a space h and leaking through packing clearances i, which have increased due to shaft movement, acts on a shaft disc f to counteract the unbalanced turbine pressure. The shaft movement decreases the packing clearances k. The packing at i or k may be radial only as shown on the left-hand side of Fig. 2. The disc f may be situated in the H.P. end of the turbine.
