Abstract
781,505. Elastic fluid turbines; stuffing-box substitutes. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Jan. 27, 1956 [Jan. 31, 1955], No. 2810/55. Classes 110 (3) and 122 (5). In a condensing steam turbine shaft gland sealing steam is supplied to a pocket located between an inner pocket connected to a point of the turbine plant at sub-atmospheric pressure and a vented outer pocket. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 sealing steam is supplied through a main valve 10, a manifold 9 and throttle valves 8 to pockets 6 of labyrinth glands 3 of a turbine 1 and a pocket 11 in the high-pressure end gland is connected by a pipe 12 to the condenser 13. A further pocket 14 may be arranged between the pocket 11 and the turbine casing and connected, as by pipe 15, to an intermediate stage of the turbine. Pockets 4 at the outer ends of the glands are vented through vents 5. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the vents 5 are led to gland condensers and a connection is provided between the manifold 9 and an intermediate turbine stage so that sealing steam may be supplied from that stage during normal load operation.
