407,397. Stuffing-box substitutes. PARSONS MARINE STEAM TURBINE CO., Ltd., COOK, S. S., and DOUGLAS, L. M., Wallsend-on-Tyne. Sept. 19, 1932, No. 26049. [Class 122 (v).] In a shaft-packing arrangement particularly suitable for steam turbines, leakage steam from the high pressure turbine a is led over gland pockets a<5>, a<4> separated by labyrinth packing a<2> and thence by pipes a<6>, a<7> to a reservoir e. To adjust the pressure in the reservoir e and thus correct lockage flow to the glands, live steam may be conducted to the re ;ervoir by way of the pipe f, which is connected with a leak-off pipe c by the control valve h. Steam from the reservoir may be led to he low-pressure turbine b over a similar arrangement of pipes and glands on the turbine shaft. Various modifications are described, in the case of a ship-installation each starboard and port pairs of turbines has its own reservoir which are controlled by a common supply and leak-off pipe. In other arrangements, the outer and inner high-pressure gland pockets are directly connected to the outer and inner lowpressure gland pockets, these pipes being also intermediately connected to the steam reservoir. This connection may take the form of a large collector pipe which represents a considerable part of the capacity of the reservoir.
