Stuffing - boxes, substitutes for; boxes; boxes connected to source of high or low pressure. - In centrifugal packing for turbines &c. two or more impellers 16, 17 are arranged in series, a passage 18<a> in the partition 18 connecting the low-pressure point of the impeller 16 to the high-pressure point of the impeller 17. Water or other liquid is supplied to the impeller 16 by a passage 19. The casing is provided also with a space 13 which is connected by a passage 14 to a source of steam supply in order to prevent leakage of air into the turbine. If the pressure in the turbine casing is above that of the atmosphere, the passage 14 serves to conduct away leakage. Packing-rings 7, 10 on each side of the space 13 are either pressed against the shaft or held in close proximity to it. The packing casing is formed with a neck entering the aperture in the turbine casing 6, and, in order to facilitate removal, the packing casing is divided in a plane at right-angles to the axis of the shaft as well as axially.
