Abstract

371,877. Regulating reciprocating pumps. DANIELS, Ltd., T. H. & J. and DANIELS, J. S., Lightpill Iron Works, Stroud, Gloucestershire. Jan. 24, 1931, No. 2438. [Class 102 (i).] A reciprocating pump of the type comprising several plungers wherein the number of plungers operating decrease as the delivery pressure increases and the number increase as the delivery pressure decreases are provided with pressure sensitive means in certain or all of the cylinders to operate the byepass valves of the respective cylinders. Fig. 2 shows a pump comprising two plungers 6, 7 of different diameter actuated by cranks. A suction vessel is formed in the bed of the pump and the cylinders have suction valves 14, 16 and delivery valves 15, 17 leading to a common delivery 18 and connected to chambers 19, 20. In each of the chambers 19, 20 is a spring- loaded plunger 21 provided with a slot 31 in which engage levers 32, 38. The lever 32 carries a roller 33 engaging a link 34 biased by a weight 36 and notched at 35 in which engages a lever 38 engaging a rod 40 biased upwards by a spring 41 and adapted to operate the byepass valve 46. The lever 38 is cut away at 38a to allow lost motion in the groove 31. As the delivery pressure rises the lever 38 is tripped and the valve 46 opened and as the delivery pressure falls the rod 40 is pulled downwards and the valve 46 allowed to close. The spring loading of the plungers 21 varies for each cylinder.
