[Class 102 (i).] In lifting-jacks and other hydraulic apparatus, in order to reduce the speed of lifting &c. when the load is taken up, or when the load exceeds a certain value, the single-acting pump-plunger 1 is formed with passages 5, 6, controlled for example by ball valves 7a, 7b. On the working stroke, if the pressure is sufficient to open the valve 7a part of the liquid passes from the pump chamber A to the chamber B behind the plunger and the effective area of the plunger 1 is the area of the rod 3. On the return stroke, liquid returns from the chamber B to the pump chamber A and additional liquid is drawn into the pump chamber through the suction valve (not shown).
