[Class 69 (ii).] Means for controlling the flow of liquid to and from the cylinder of an hydraulic jack or like lifting-device comprises a series of coaxial chambers fitted with ball or other suctionactuated valves arranged in the following manner in order to avoid the use of a separate return passage for the liquid and a separate check valve for braking the descent of the load. An actuating-lever A is pivoted at B to a pump plunger 1, below the cylinder 3 of which are arranged chambers 5, 4, 8, 9, Figs. 1 and 2, fitted with suction and pressure-actuated ball valves 14, 13, 15. The cylinder 3 is connected by a duct 2 to the chamber 4, and the chamber 5 is connected by a duct 6 to a supply reservoir 7, and the chamber 9 by a duct 10 to the lower end of the jack cylinder 11, fitted with a piston F. When the plunger 1 is raised, liquid flows from the reservoir 7 through the duct 6, the chambers 5, 4, and the duct 2 into the cylinder 3, the valve 14 being opened and the valve 13 closed. When the plunger 1 is depressed, the valve 14 is closed and the valve 13 opened, and liquid is forced from the cylinder 3 through the duct 2, chambers 4, 8, 9, and duct 10 to the jack cylinder 11. The load is lowered by an additional depression of the piston 1, whereby a sliding rod 16 is depressed by the piston to open the valve 14, thus re-establishing communication from the jack cylinder 11 through the chambers and duct 6 to the reservoir 7. On a predetermined intensity of the return flow, the valve 15 is closed, and the liquid flows through restricted passages 18 in the valve seat to effect a braking action. The throttling or braking action is assisted by an enlargement 17 on the rod 16 opposite the duct 6, the chamber 5 being tapered if desired to increase the throttling action.
