Valves and valve seats, arrangement of. - A hydraulic jack is provided with means for keeping the operative fluid under sufficient pressure to relieve the pump of the necessity of any sucking action in its operation. A lateral extension 44 of the casing 10 carries the pump cylinder 46, the pump plunger 56 having a tubular extension 60 within which is frictionally mounted the split stem 66, Fig 4, of the valve 64. Passages 50, 52 connect the valve chamber 48 to the reservoir 36 and to the ram chamber 52<1>, the passages being connected by a valve controlled byepass for lowering. In operation, the handle 86 is rocked to raise the pump plunger and valve 64 so that the fluid under slight pressure in the reservoir passes into the plunger cylinder. On the pressure stroke the valve is first seated and further movement of the plunger forces the pressure fluid into the ram chamber 52<1> and so raises the ram.
