Abstract

An alloy which is cast to form a metal-working die may be formed of tungsten carbide, with 1-7 per cent of carbon, and less than 20 per cent of low-melting metals. Some of the tungsten carbide may be replaced by chromium or by a metal of the same group, such an alloy having the composition, chromium up to 30 per cent, iron, cobalt, or nickel up to 20 per cent, and tungsten carbide with 1-4 per cent of carbon. Instead of melting tungsten carbide, metallic tungsten may be melted in the presence of carbon, or carbon-yielding gases.
