509,456. Making compound strip. WILLIAMS, W. P. (American Rolling Mill Co.). June 22, 1938, No. 18607. [Classes 83 (i), 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Casting; rolling.-Molten metal 21 in passing along with one or more metal strips 29, 30 through a heatinsulated reservoir 20 and an artificially cooled throat 22 heats up the strips to form a good welding bond therewith before the composite metals come in contact with a cooling and sizing throat 24, Fig. 5, or cooled rolls 5, Fig. 1, which treat a single strip 1 only. The throat 24 has fins 28 providing recess for cooling fluid supplied through pipes 27. The strips 29,30 may pass through preheaters 37 (Fig. 6, not shown) before entering the molten metal. The composite strip 33 may be further cooled by blasts of cooling fluid from pipes 34 and then may be sized by other rolls.
