Abstract

736,401. Casting processes. BRENNAN, J. B. March 17, 1952, No. 6847/52. Class 83 (1). [Also in Groups V and XXIII] In a continuous-casting process a part of the strip cast is induction-heated and another cooled during its passage through the die. The metal is fed from a crucible 1, kept at a constant level by hand ladling, to a die 6. Heating and cooling coils 5, 8 respectively are set at an angle to give a tapered cooling. effect to the strip. Alternatively, multiple cooling coils of decreasing effect may be used. Rolls 9 assist in finishing and withdrawing the strip. The strip is cooled and lubricated at the exit end by molten lead passing through a porous tungsten mass 14. In a modification, the tapered cooling effect is achieved by passing the metal round a roll 10, Fig. 4, which is cooled by water jets 16 while the opposite side is cooled gradually by coils 5, 5a and 8. In a further apparatus, the strip is drawn through a die 4 by rolls 9. The end of the die may be of porous graphite, tungsten, aluminium oxide, &c., so that molten lead or other lubricant may be passed around the strip. The apparatus may be used for glass and thermoplastics. For a multiple-sided strip there may be several alternate hot and cold areas around the strip induced by lengthwise heating elements. The use of the process results in a fine-grain structure in the metal.
