Abstract

In a continuous casting process, particularly when using rimmed or partly killed steel, the melt is conducted through a degasification chamber under high vacuum shortly before it enters the mould, the melt entering the degasification chamber 3 from the side in a substantially horizontal jet. Discharge from a tundish 2 is regulated by radio-active means 37, 37a to maintain a predetermined constant level of metal in the chamber 3. In the gap between the chamber discharge outlet 8 and the mould 9 which is preferably oscillatable the metal is shielded by an inert gas which may be obtained from gas burners 11. The issuing casting 13 enters a cooling path 24, driving <PICT:0951199/C3/1> rolls 25, is deflected by a bending roller 26 into a heat-insulating passage 27, passes through straightening rollers 28, a heating furnace 29, a descaling device 30, which may be a hot rolling machine or a water jet device and finally enters a planetary rolling mill 33 followed by smoothing rolls 35. The degasification chamber may discharge into an intermediate vessel between it and the mould, the discharge being controlled in accordance with the bath level in said vessel. Further the rolling mill may be mounted vertically below the mould and the cooling regulated so that the casting is suitable for rolling without reheat. Several moulds may be fed simultaneously.
