Abstract

540,177. Casting composite articles ; making bearings. GLACIER METAL CO., Ltd., HOLLIGAN, P. T., and BATE, J. April 2, 1940, No. 5936. Addition to 540,048. [Classes 83 (i) and 83 (ii)] Bearings are made by coating a strip of steel or other backing metal with aluminium or zinc or an alloy of either, as in the parent Specification, machining the coated face while keeping the strip flat, cutting to form blanks which are then formed into whole or semicylinders with the coating inside, performing one or more further pressing operations on each blank to produce a permanent set, and finally machining the inner surface to the required size, the coating at no time being subjected to sufficient tension to crack it. The cleaned strip 1 may be fed by rolls 2 past pots 3, 6, which apply zinc-ammonium-chloride, a furnace 4 at 300‹C, a pot 8 and bath 12, which apply zinc containing 1 per cent of aluminium at 450 to 500‹, an asbestos wiper 17, and a pot 15, having a gate 18 to determine the thickness of the aluminium layer which it applies at 700‹C. A furnace 10 heats the strip during coating and it is slowly cooled by an air jet 19. The strip then passes between feed or pressure rolls 21 to a milling device 20, 22, as described in Specification 522,831, and a blanking machine 23. If desired the coating may be given an additional coat of soft antifriction metal 0.001 to 0.003 inch thick. Specification 100,448, [Class 83 (i)], also is referred to.
