Abstract

358,543. Converting. AKT.-GES. BROWN, BOVERI, ET CIE, Baden, Switzerland. June 10, 1930, No. 17790. Convention date, Aug. 28, 1929. [Class 38 (ii).] The potential for a controlling grid of a mercuryvapour rectifier is taken from insulated metallic parts charged by an arc which is situated within the rectifier but is independent of the main arc. A grid d controlling the main arc between the anode band the cathode c is charged through a switch h by grids g<1>, g<2> which are charged by the auxiliary arcs between the cathode and exciter anodes e<1>, e<2>. The potential may be varied by choking the auxiliary arcs, e.g. by the insertion of grids or sleeves between the cathode and the grids g<1>, g<2>. Limiting resistances i are used. The grid d may be negatively biased by connecting it through the switch h to the star point of the supply transformer and to the cathode through a resistance k. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states also that the auxiliary arcs may be housed within a separate container, see Fig. 2 (cancelled) not shown. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
