Abstract
358,443. Spring or weight applied brakes; transmitting mechanism. PERNIK, A., Mladß Boleslav, Czecho-Slovakia. April 1, 1930, No. 10329. Convention date, April 3, 1929. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 103 (i).] Means for operating a brake or other device comprises a spring, weight, or other source of power, the line of action of which can be varied to render the power more or less effective. As shown in Fig. 1, a spring 9 abuts upon a curved guide 8 and upon one arm of a lever 6 pivoted to a slidable rod 3 carrying a brake block 1 so that by actuating the lever the line of action of the spring may be brought into greater or less coincidence with the rod 3 to vary the pressure applied by the spring to the brake block. In Fig. 4, the spring box 12 pivoted to the fixed arm 18 carries a roller 7<1> slidable on a lever 3<1> secured to the brake-operating shaft 4<1>. The roller is caused to traverse the lever by an operating lever 17 and rod 6<1>. The lever 18 may be adjusted by a screw 19 to compensate for wear of the brakes. There may be a connection from the lever 17 to the lever 3<1> to permit direct operation of the brakes in the event of failure of the spring. In another arrangement the spring 12 is immovable and its point of action is varied by moving the roller 7<1>. In a further construction, a spring enclosed in a telescopic casing is adapted to be moved bodily between a pair of pivoted brake shoes each engaged by a roller carried by the casing so as to vary the pressure by which the shoes are applied to the interior of a brake drum or to effect their release. The spring may be replaced by a weight or by compressed gas.
