Abstract

<PICT:0355645/IV/1> Cheeses 1, particularly of artificial silk, are washed, bleached, desulphurized, dyed, or otherwise treated with liquids without re - spooling by first arranging them, without using a central spindle, in a longitudinally-divided perforated tube 3, with the aid of intermediate members 5 provided with tubular portions 6 which project into the cheeses, and which are preferably perforated. The desired liquid is then forced through the cheeses either from the outside to the inside, or vice versa, or in both directions alternately. This may be done by placing the tube 3 in a vessel containing the treatment liquid and connecting it at the top to a suction device, so that the liquid enters the tube through the perforations 4 and is withdrawn through the central channel 7. Liquid may alternatively be forced in from below, the top of the tube 3 being closed; or the tube may be placed in a horizontal position partly immersed in the liquid, and rotated. The cheeses are preferably protected from damage by being spun on a suitable permeable layer 2, for example, of cotton.
