Abstract

<PICT:0352771/IV/1> <PICT:0352771/IV/2> <PICT:0352771/IV/3> Coiled annular masses of artificial silk obtained in a spinning can or on a spool of adjustable diameter are removed from the spinning can or spool and mounted for liquid or gaseous treatment around a column having outwardly extensible parts and disposed inside a container. The extensible parts are expanded outwardly to secure the coil. The hollow column or hollow space between the column and the coil is placed in communication with a suction or pressure conduit, and the liquids or gases required for the treatment are passed through the windings of the coil by means of suction or pressure. As shown in Fig. 1, coils removed from spinning cans or from adjustable spools are slid on a hollow standard 2 placed in a container 1 which may be closed. The standard 2 is provided with outwardly movable parts 4, Fig. 3, consisting of pairs of parallel exterior and interior longitudinal bars interconnected by two transverse bars so as to provide a complete frame. A cover member 6 is placed over the upper end of the coils arranged round the column. The parts 4 are moved outwardly to secure the coils 3. In the axial direction the coils bear tightly on each other leaving no interstices between individual coils. The column 2 is perforated and hollow and communicates through a branch pipe 7 with a suction or pressure conduit 9. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, the column 2 is imperforate, but the hollow space 5 between the column and the coil 3 communicates with the suction or pressure conduit by means of passages 8 and the pipe 7. Liquids or gases required for washing, desulphurizing, bleaching, drying, or dyeing may thus be passed through the coils in either direction and may be used over again if circulating means are provided. In a modified form of column, only one set of outwardly movable parts 4 is provided, and in this case the column must be of the hollow perforated type.
