Abstract
<PICT:0367163/IV/1> Spinning cakes spun by the spinning pot method are treated with washing, bleaching, desulphurizing, acidulating, scrooping, or like baths by placing the cakes 5 in an open vessel 2 on perforated or porous tubes 1 open at the top and provided with an outflow 3 for the treatment liquid at the bottom, and leading the liquid from the outside inwards through the cakes by means of a drop in pressure, the cakes being sealed at their upper and lower surfaces, for example, by means of rubber or felt rings 6, 7, and further weighting rings 8 resting on the upper rings 6. The hydrostatic fall in pressure should not be more than \ba1/10\be atmosphere, the liquid level not rising much beyond the upper edge of the cakes, and being kept constant, for example, by means of an overflow 10, which may be replaced by a siphon tube, or by a float. An emptying pipe 11 and an overflow container 12 are provided, and also, where it is desired to use the liquid again, a further container for the outflow from the holes 3. The cakes treated are covered with permeable fabric, for example, by using tubular coverings of artificial silk or mixed yarn introduced from the inside of the cake and wrapped around the outside, or by inserting the cakes in wider tubular coverings the ends of which are then turned inwards.
