Abstract

169,630. Packer, J. H. Oct. 12, 1920. Filters with loose filtering-materials.-Apparatus for purifying oil comprises chambers 202, 203, communicating at the bottom and divided into upper and lower compartments by filters 36, 136, a steam heating-pipe 39, and means for maintaining water up to a constant level in the lower compartment of the chamber 203. The oil passes downwards through the filter 36, upwards through the water, and overflows from above the filter 136 into a third chamber 204. Water originally mixed with the oil is retained in the chamber 203, the water-level in which is kept constant by overflow to a drain 86 through a bucket 84 adjustably supported on a guide 82 and connected to the chamber 203 through a filter 93 by a flexible tube 88 and a pipe 95. Oil from the upper part of the chamber 204 passes through a tube 20 to the bottom of a chamber 21, where impurities settle and oil flows over the top of a receptacle 23, passes up a funnel 25 containing water, through a filter 31, and thence to an outer chamber communicating with the lower part of the chamber 204, from which it is drawn off as required.
