Abstract
325,529. Fowler, C. Oct. 15, 1928. Fatty oils, extracting.- In apparatus for the extraction of cod-liver and like oils by cooking in an atmosphere of steam, the extracted oil is removed by a draw-off device. In a suitable apparatus, the cleaned livers in a tank 1, Fig. 1, are agitated by a stirrer 4, and treated with steam admitted through a valve 14 and a pipe 8 from a steam generator 6. When cooking is complete the contents are allowed to settle, and the supernatant layer of oil is drawn off by one or more devices 5, and passes through a pipe 13 and a filter 12 to the barrel 10, each of which is filled with steam passing through a valve 15 and a pipe 9 &c. The draw-off device may comprise (1) an inner tube 21, Fig. 2, having a hole 24, which may be lowered by a screwed rod 125, to coincide with the slot 23 in the outer tube 20 at oil level; (2) a single tube 25, Fig. 3, having a hole 26, and passing through a gland 27, (3) a compartment mounted vertically alongside the tank containing the oil and separated therefrom by a gate adapted to slide vertically, and through which the oil is drawn off, or (4) a flexible tube 31, Fig. 6, attached to a funnel 32, and connected to floats 33 which maintain the entry orifice just below the surface of the oil. The latter device may be used in pivotally or flexibly mounted extraction apparatus such as is shown in Fig. 6, and used in floating factories. A filter screen may be provided at the entry to the draw off devices.
