Abstract

335,682. Wigley, C. G., and Potts, C. Aug. 12, 1929. Treating-mat6rials; manures.-Sewage, sludge, and like organic matter is deodorized and converted into fertilizer by treating it with a growth of the mycelium of fungi such as Mucor or Rhisopus developed under forced growth conditions. The sewage is delivered primarily to a settling tank 10 through an inlet 11, the separated liquid. leaving by the exit 12 for filterbeds or the like. The deposited sludge is drawn at intervals into auxiliary tanks 14 for treatment with the fungi, the residual liquid escaping through the pipe 20. A steam coil 25 supplies heat and moisture when necessary to maintain the temperature between the limits of 40‹ F. to 110‹ F. and the moisture content 10 to 15 per cent. The supply of air is reduced to a minimum, and the light is subdued. At the end of about four days the material is removed from the tanks 14 and bagged for sale as a fertilizer. In a modified construction the fungus tank is portable and has a reticulated bottom of coarse woven material or a wire screen.
