Abstract
211,717. Knight, R. C., and Smith, H. R. March 5, 1923. Separating by gravity.-Apparatus for separating liquids of different specific gravities, such as oil and water, comprises a U-shaped conduit of such a depth that the oil separating in one leg a is able to ascend against the downward flow of mixed liquid from an inlet c. The water rises up the leg b which terminates in an adjustable bell-mout,h g in an observation trap h. An oil overflow d is separated from the inlet c by a plate e. A heating coil n and draw-off cocks r may be provided. The trap h contains a wire gauze scrubber j and the water flows away under a baffle m. Compressed air may be introduced into the leg a to assist the separation of the liquids. The U-shaped conduit may be replaced by two ducts one within the other, the ducts being in communication at the bottom. The outer duct may be double-walled so that an annular space, which may serve as an observation trap to receive one of the liquids, is formed between the inner duct and the inner wall of the outer duct. When applied to an oil-tank vessel, the apparatus may be arranged in the coffer dam and the U-shaped conduit extend vertically from the deck to the bottom of the ship. According to the Provisional Specification a non-return valve may be provided at or near the bottom of the conduit.
