Abstract

Separate by gravity. -Apparatus for separating the components of a liquid mixture comprises a tank A fitted with plates E, F to the space between which the mixture is delivered by a central pipe B so that the velocity of flow decreases as it passes outward to the rims of the plates and the lighter liquid rises to an outlet C while the heavier passes to an outlet D. The outlets may be adjustable, one arrangement being described in which a tank with an adjustable weir is provided on the outlet D. The plates E, F, may be plane, curved or conical and they may be corrugated. Fig. 11 shows an arrangement in which several pairs of plates are provided the upper member of each pair having a central orifice D<8> and an upper cylindrical extension M. As shown in Fig. 23 the lower plate may be provided with a central conical deflector. The apparatus may be used for separating oil from ballast water on board ship and in that case may be suspended below the deck N, Fig. 24, by means of slings S, the inlet and outlet connections having flexible parts B', C<1>, D<5>.
