Abstract
285,350. Deutsche Werft Akt.-Ges. Feb. 25, 1927, [Convention date]. Separating by gravity.-An apparatus for separating oil from the bilge or ballastwater of ships comprises a vessel b within which is a. conical casing f. The impure water is pumped through a pipe a and impinges on a plate d so curved as to spray the water towards the walls of the casing f. The water tends to follow the general direction of the casing walls and flow off over the upper rim of the casing, whereas the particles fail, owing to their greater buoyancy, follow a path more nearly approaching the vertical and are collected by an inverted-funnelshaped plate g and passed into a collecting chamber h. The water flows away at the outlet i, and the oil is withdrawn continuously or intermittently from the chamber h.
