Abstract

533,235. Centrifugal separators. NICHOLS ENGINEERING & RESEARCH CORPORATION. Oct. 19, 1939, No. 28270. Convention date, Nov. 19, 1938. [Class 23] Undesired particles are separated from a liquid suspension, especially a suspension used in the manufacture of paper, in a separator 10 of the type described in Specification 507,412 in which a downward vortex is formed from the inlet 12 and a second vortex travels after reversal upwards through the first vortex to the clean liquid outlet 18. Below the lower ends of the vortices is fixed a disc 20 with a number of apertures leading to a small conical chamber 23 with a restricted conduit 24 opening into a settling chamber 25. This chamber contains liquid which remains in a quiescent state, and a constant drawing off of liquid from the upper peripheral portion is effected by the pipe 26. This causes a small continuous flow from the separator 10 to the chamber 25 and the impurities are carried into the chamber by this flow. The chamber can be emptied when necessary by the valve 29 and washing water can be supplied through the valve 30. An annular obstruction 15 is placed in the separator to restrict the diameter of the vortex. A number of separator units 40, Fig. 2, may be employed together, and the liquid withdrawn from the settling chambers 25. is passed by the pipe 45 and the pump 46 to a secondary separator 48 in which the impurities are separated out to pass to the corresponding settling chamber, while the liquid passes to the tank 47. The purified liquid which passes over the overflow weir 51 of this tank is conducted by the pipe 52 to the intake of the pump 41 which supplies the intake manifold 42 of the. separators, or to the "white water" system of a paper making machine, or to the main intake of the machine. The liquid from the bottom of the tank 47 passes round a baffle 54 and through the pipe 53 to the pump 46 so that an adequate flow is assured through the separator 48. The tank also has a liquid supply through the pipe 49 controlled by a valve 50 operated by a float 50<SP>1</SP>.
