Abstract

532,808. Centrifugal separators. SCOTT. H. E. B. July 26, 1939, No. 21725. [Class 23] A purifier for paper pulp has a cylindrical vortex vessel 1 into. which the pulp is injected tangentially from the inlet 3, and from which the purified pulp is withdrawn from a point well below the inlet, in an upward direction through the tube 7 and outlet 6. A baffle 16 extends nearly across the vessel 1 thus forming a settling chamber in the lower part separated from the vortex chamber in the upper part, the two chambers being connected only by the annular gap between the baffle and the chamber wall. A tapered skirt 18 is supported by a spider 17 on the tube 15 and is arranged so that a small gap is left between the skirt and the baffle 16. The tube 15 rises from a hollow upright cone 14 which rests on the end of a tube 12 connected to the outlet 13 for the impure pulp. A flanged collecting cone 9 is arranged beneath the vessel 1 and is connected by an isolating valve to a collecting chamber 19. The valve consists of a cylindrical cock 21 in a ported :seat 22, a transverse bore across the cock containing a threaded sleeve 23. This sleeve can be replaced by another with a bore suitable to the work to-be done. A groove 25 round the cock forms an air vent from the collector 19 to one of the lateral openings 24 of the seating. The pulp is supplied from a pump to the inlet 3 and a vortex is set up in the vessel 1. The heavy impurities are thrown outwards and drop past the baffle 16 to the cone 9. Their passage is assisted by the flow of a slight quantity of pulp through the gap between the baffle 16 and the vessel 1; this is achieved by withdrawing material from the settling chamber through the pipe 15, the cone 14 and the pipe 13, and the pipe 13 may be connected to an auxiliary separator. Where it is desired to withdraw light impurities, their outlet is associated with but separate from the outlet for the pure pulp.
