Abstract
750,198. Separating liquid particles from gases. GAS COUNCIL. Dec. 21, 1954 [Dec. 22, 1953], No. 35656/53. Class 123(3). Apparatus for separating gases and liquids, especially steam and water, consists of a cylindrical shell 1 closed by cover plates 4, 5 which are provided respectively with coaxially located inlet and outlet pipes 10, 6. The inlet pipe 10 has an outer part 11 and an inner part 12 terminating in a thickened end 13. A casting 14 shaped to provide an annular trough 15 surrounding a stem 16 is mounted coaxially within shell 1 with the end 13 of pipe 12 dipping into the trough to provide an annular gas inlet passage which gradually decreases in crosssectional area down to the bottom of the trough and then increases up to the outer edge 24 thereof. Gas entering pipe 10 is accelerated as it passes into the trough and entrained liquid particles are deposited therein as its direction of flow is reversed. Any liquid stripped from the trough surface by the gas is deposited on cover 4 as the flow direction is again reversed when the gas leaves the trough and flows towards the outlet pipe 6. To prevent any liquid draining on cover 5 from being re-entrained, the outlet pipe extends a short distance inside the cover and is provided with an outwardly projecting flange 7. Separated liquid is removed through an outlet 26.
