Abstract

Separating by gravity. - In apparatus for separating liquids, such as oil and water, comprising a vessel into which the mixture is passed continuously, the lighter liquid separating as an upper layer and the heavier liquid being continuously discharged, the outlet for the heavier liquid is controlled automatically by the accumulation of the separated lighter liquid so as to give a discharging head or pressure to expel the lighter liquid. The mixture is supplied to a tank 1 through an inlet 2 and cone-shaped trunk 3, lighter liquid collects in compartments 4, 12, 13. 14, and the heavier liquid is normally discharged through an outlet 10. When a suitable layer of lighter liquid has collected, the outlet 10 is closed by a float 8, which sinks in the lighter liquid, the float operating the valve through mechanical, fiuid pressure or electrical means as described in Specification 218,462. The heavy liquid is then temporarily discharged through an outlet 11 and the lighter liquid through outlets 6. Rise of the heavy liquid subsequently causes floats 7 to close the outlets 6, and the float 7 for the compartment 4 in rising opens the valve 10 by mechanical, fluid pressure or electrical means. Weirs may take the place of the outlets 6. It is stated that the float 8 may be arranged to both open and close the outlet 10. Specification 235,647 also is referred to.
