Abstract

209,182. Richards, T. D. Oct. 4, 1922. Recovering waste lubricants.-Used lubricating oils are made fit for re-use by passing an agitated mixture with water through a series of concentric wire gauze screens into a settling- vessel. Using the apparatus shown a steamagitated mixture of 1 volume of oil with about 40 volumes of water is run into a funnel 12 and passes through a grating 14, a pipe 15, concentric screens 16, 17, 18, a transverse screen 24, a pipe 32, and concentric screens 33 to a solid diaphragm 34. The upper layer, consisting largely of oil, flows through a perforated extension 35, screens 39, 40 and inlet 36 to a settling vessel 45, while the watery layer passes through an opening 50, screens 39, 40, and inlet 54. The oil is taken off by a pipe 72 to louvre tables 77, 78, where it is freed from light oils and remaining water by capillary attraction, and is run off through a channel 47; the water flows to a waste pipe 45 through a pipe 59 having an air inlet pipe 52 to prevent siphoning. Solid impurities filtered or settled out collect in the pan bottoms 21, 91 of the concentric screens and in the bottom of the vessels; they may be removed from the vessels 30, 48 through valves 43, 68. There are also provided overflow pipes 27, 46 having air-inlet pipes 49, 51 to prevent siphoning, and perforated baffles 41, 57, 58, 69 and a plain baffle 62 to prevent surging of the liquid.
