[Class 51 (i).] In machinery, such as a travelling grate stoker, in which a sudden stoppage would cause damage, a flywheel is employed having sufficient inertia to continue the operation of the machine until suitable steps have been taken, should the driving motor stop. The flywheel 8 may be mounted on a countershaft 8<1>, driven at a higher speed from the shaft of the motor 6 through pulleys 11, 8<a> and a belt 11<1>. Should the motor stop, the drive is shifted to pulleys 12, 8b having a lower velocity ratio. Slipping clutches 9 may be interposed between the flywheel and the driving motor and driven machinery.
