Abstract
A two-speed constant mesh gear has a slip clutch in each power path to give infinitely variable output speed. The clutches are energized simultaneously for braking. As shown the transmission is employed between a squirrel cage motor 1 and a drum 16 of a tyre building machine and has magnetic particle clutches 14, 7 in the direct drive path and a layshaft 9 of a step-down train respectively. For normal running the clutches are selectively fully energized to give one of the two ratios, but for other speeds of short duration, or to control the acceleration of the drum, a selected clutch is partially energized. For maximum braking both clutches are fully energized, or to obtain a predetermined deceleration from high speed the clutch 14 is fully energized and clutch 7 partially energized, while for braking from low speeds clutch 7 is fully energized and clutch 14 partially energized. As shown gear pairs 3, 12 are provided between the lay shaft and the input and output shaft if a reversing gear is required one gear pair is replaced by a belt drive. Electrostatic or eddy current clutches may be used instead of magnetic particle clutches.
