Tn all whom it may concern:
lie it known that I. llonnirr Glen I'IUTCHI- soN, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at Sittingbourne Paper Mills, Sittingbourne, in the county of Kent, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Paper and Like Machinery, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to paper making machinery and has for its object to obtain an improved drive therefor particularly with a view to the elimination of vibration, gears, tooth wheels, friction clutches, or other friction devices, which are especially undesirable more particularly in connection with high speed working.
Among .the objects of the present invention for example we desire to eliminate toothed reducing gear which is very objectionable from the point of view of noise and also friction particularly when the same is used in connection with high speed rolls requiring a high torque for starting them or for initially speeding up.
The invention consists in a drive for the parts or sections of paper-making 1nachincry in which the desired shaft is directly driven through belts or the like which can be suitably adjusted as regards tension for throwing the machine into or outof operation. V r
The invention also consists in a high speed drive for paper-making machinery in which the individual sections are driven through belts or rope pulleys mounted on suitable short shafts'wliich can be raised and lowered for the purpose of starting and stopping the machine.
The invention also consists in the improvements in and relating to paper-making machinery and particularly to high speed paper-making machinery hereinafter indicated.
Referring now to the accompanying dia- -grammatic drawings which illustrate one manner of carrying this invention into effect, Figure l is a side elevation, Fig. 2 a front-elevation looking in the direction of the arrow of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a plan of an arrangement particularly suitable for high speed drives. Figs. 4 and 5 show respectively a plan of the upper driving pulleys and a plan of the lower drive of part of a Specification of Letters Patent.

In carrying the inventtioninto efi'ect in the form illustrated by way of example, rope pulleys, a, are mounted on a short shaft, 6, carried in suitable bearings, c and (Z. On the slmi't b is also mounted a conical pulley, 6, adapted to receive a belt f which passes over another pulley g in connection through the usual clutch w with the section of machine to be driven. The position of the belt f on the shaft 9 can readily be ad justcd by .rreans of a striker, y, operated from the screwed rod The shaft bcarrying the lower pulley e, is mounted on a swinging arm 12. with balance weights 2 the arm having a circular rack 5 connected thereto, a pinion j being placed adjacent for cooperating with the rack to move the arm it about its fulcrum 7c and thereby to lift to some degree the lower belt pulley e for the purpose of relieving the tension on the belt f necessary for driving purposes. The pinion 7' is operated through a shaft 1 and bevel wheel or cranks m and n placed in a convenient position with-respect to the parts of the machine, in fact the machine and this gear can conveniently be placed on the floor level and the lower pulleyand other parts in a pit.
In Figs. 4 and 5 there are illustrated certain rolls or sections to which the arrangements of the above kind are applied. The pulleys, e, e and e represent respectively the swinging pulleys represented by e in Fig. 1 corresponding to the couch rolls and the first, second and third press rolls respectively. Similarly the pulleys, g, 9 correspond to the upper pulleys connected to the sections or rolls to be driven.
In operation the lower pulley e is com tinually rotated while the drive is applied to the belt pulleys. .To start the machine section the striking gear 0. connected through the vertical rod Z and bevel wheels m and n to the pinion j is operated so to move the lever 10' carrying the lower belt pulley ethat sufficient tension is put on the belt connecting the upper and lower pulleys g and e respectively to drive the upper pulley g and thereby drive the section of the machine connected thereto.
It will be understood that the above exmarked on the striking gearsor in any other convenient manner.
It will be appreciated that according to the present invention a simple and effective means of starting and stopping the sections of a paper making machine is obtained en abling high speeds to be utilized without vibration or gearing troubles and with little lubrication and also permitting ordinary belts to be employed. Further no clutches are needed and because the belt is at rest when the machine is stopped the life of the belt is lengthened. Further great steadiness.

Having now described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-- ters Patent is 1. In paper making machinery, a section 'drive comprising an arm, means for swingmg the same, and a pulley mounted. on the arm; as setforth.
2. In paper making machinery, a section drive comprising a lever with fulcrum therefor, rope pulleys mounted. on said lever, and a belt pulley also mounted on said lever, together with means for swinging the about said fulcrum; as set forth.

In paper making machinery a lever and fulcrum therefor, a driving shaft journaled in said lever, a pulley mounted on said drivii-aft, a driven shaft disposed above said up; shaft with a pulley thereon, friction means connecting said driving and said driven shafts, a machine sect-ion and amechanical connection from said driven shaft to said machine section; as set forth.
