Abstract

8218. Milne, S. April 14. Driving-mechanism.-In a system for driving the different sections of a paper machine, and in speedreducing gear therefor, the several sets of speed reducing-gear are enclosed in oil-tight casings, in the sides of which are bearings for the high and low speed shafts. The casings are formed in two parts, one fixed and one adjustable, so that the heights of the low and high speed shafts are relatively adjustable. Several sets of reducing- gear are shown. In Fig. 3, a large internallytoothed wheel e is mounted on a low-speed shaft d and a pinion f is mounted on the high-speed shaft c. In Fig. 4 is shown a large stationary internallytoothed wheel g, planetary pinions i carried on a cross-bar j on the low-speed shaft, and a sunpinion h fixed to the high-speed shaft. Fig. 5 shows an internally-toothed gear-wheel k mounted on the low-speed shaft, a pinion mounted on fixed studs m, and a pinion n on the high-speed shaft c. Figs. 4 and 5 show the high and low speed shafts in line ; the arrangement shown in Fig. 3 can be used to keep the high-speed shafts all at the same height in spite of the varying heights of the lowspeed shafts. Instead of internal gearing, spur gearing or bevel-gearing such as Marshall's gearing may be employed. To drive the reducing-gear, an expanding rope pulley, such as that described in Specification No. 16,684, A.D. 1901, [Abridgment Class Mechanism &c.], may be used. Friction clutches may be used with each set of, gear-wheels to allow the various parts to be started and stopped independently. The clutch may be attached to the boss of the driving-pinion, or to the driven pinion or roll. The sets of gear may be driven direct from the main driving-pulley on the floor level, or from an overhead driving-pulley. the friction clutches may be arranged alongside the overhead pulleys. Conical belt pulleys may be used instead of the expanding rope pulleys, or conical belt pulleys u<1>, u<2> combined with a loose ordinary belt pulley v, Fig. 10, may be used. The belt may be moved from the fast to the loose pulley by apparatus of the type described in Specification No. 11,611, A.D. 1899. Casings may be separately or collectively supplied with lubricant under pressure or otherwise in any suitable manner.
