[Published under Section 91 of the Act.] Controlling-apparatus, arrangements of hand and transmission gear in conjunction with.- Relates to variable-speed belt gearing, suitable for motor-vehicles in which a stepped conepulley drive is used, and comprises means for shifting the belt from any pair of pulleys to the next pair. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the engine shaft has two pulleys 2, 4 and a drum 5, and the driven shaft has pulleys 6, 7, 8, a loose pulley 9, and reversing-pulley 10. The belt 3 is shifted at the engine end by lateral plates 11, 12, and at the countershaft end by plates 11<1>, 12<1>, which plates are mounted on carriers furnished with rollers running in slots in pairs of supporting-guides f. The guides are shown in plan in Fig. 5. The carriers are adjusted by chains or bands 20. Several mechanisms operated by a hand-wheel, such as 27 or 21, are shown in the drawings but imperfectly described in the Specification, for moving the carriers on which the belt-shifting plates are mounted. These are all arranged to operate so that the carrier at the end of the belt which is to take step down is first actuated, and thereupon the carrier at the other end is actuated. Another form of the apparatus, similar in action but differing in constructional details and not fully described, is also shown in the Specification.
