Variable-speed belt or rope gearing comprises a series of belts 5, 6, 7 passing loosely over stepped pulleys e, h on driving and driven shafts d, g, respectively. These belts are rendered operative selectively by means of jockey pulleys i carried by spring- pulled levers l pivoted about a bar k, there being one such lever in the plane of each belt. The levers l are operated in sequence by cams n upon a revoluble drum o. The levers l may alternatively be operated by hand, or the tension of the operative belt may be increased by hand. The invention is applicable for driving lathes and other machine tools, motor.vehicles, and conveyers.
