Driving-arrangements.-A nest of graded gearwheels 150 is interposed between the driving- shafts of the spindles and rollers, with any one of which either one of three selective gear-wheels 168, 169, 171 may be connected so as to vary the relative speeds of the spindles and rollers. The invention is described as applied to a machine wherein the spindles are driven by positive-band mechanism, such as is described in Specifications 11,884/10 and 12,243/10. The gears 168, 169, 171 are splined on a shaft 158 geared with a countershaft 130 connected by bevel-wheels with a vertical shaft 32, which carries a pulley 3 for driving the spindles and is driven by a rope sheave, belt pulley, or electric motor. Two shafts such as 32 are provided for each row of spindles. The building- motion is driven from the shaft 130 through worm, sprocket, and chain gearing or through additional shafts provided with universal joints. The worm gearing at the upper end of the shaft 32 may be enclosed to permit circulation of lubricant by means of a pump, and the lower end of the shaft together with the driving-pulleys are enclosed in a pan carried by the end stand. Teeth 9 are secured in grooves 49 in the driving-pulley by means of nuts. Specification 28,278/12 is also referred to. In the Provisional Specification, it is stated that a number of worm gears may be provided for driving the vertical shafts and may be mounted for engagement with different worms or with opposite sides of the same worm, that the worms may be carried by shafts coupled together, and that the vertical shafts may be connected together by a countershaft, chain, belt band, or rope.
