Belt, rope, and toothed gearing.-In belt, rope, &c. gearing between drums or pulleys A, D, a tension pulley C for increasing the grip is positively geared to the shaft d carrying the pulley D, so that it not only increases the angle of lap on the pulley D but partakes of the drive in co-operation therewith, the total angle of lap being arranged to exceed 360 degrees. Either of the shafts c, d may constitute the driven shaft. More than one supplementary pulley may be used, and a similar tension train may be provided for the driving, as well as the driven pulley. The ratios between the pulleys and their gear pinions are generally constant throughout each train, so that all the pulleys rotate at the same peripheral speed, but trains comprising elements of different ratios may be employed where a certain measure of slip may be required. In the device shown in Fig. 4, one of the pulleys Z with its gear pinion is arranged to have an annular travel about the axis of the pulley Y, being constrained by the link L. This arrangement may be employed to put the driving-belt in or out of action, or as means for adjusting the tension. With such a construction, belt-retaining flanges, guide-forks, &c. are employed.
