Abstract

18,029. Gessner, E. Aug. 19. Pile ornap, raising and dressing.-A drum napping - machine is arranged so that, after a fabric has been sufficiently napped, a n alteration of the speed of the direct and reverse carding-rollers can be instantaneously effected, by throwing the clutches m<1>, m out of action with the cones f, e and into action with the pulleys k', k. The countershaft a is driven by pulleys o r toothed gearing from the dram shaft, and transmits the motion to the short countershafts h, g either by the cones e, f and b, e, or by the pulleys d, k and d<1>, k<1>. The pulleys l, i drive the direct and reverse canding-rollers respectively, and when the clutches m, m<1> are altered from the first position abovestated to the second, the pulley l is driven more quickly, and with it the direct-acting rollers, aud the pulley i and the reverse-acting rollers are driven more slowly. The result is a condensing or felting action on the nap. The change mechanism may be arranged all on the driving-end of the machine, and the cone pulleys on the other end, when the belts which drive the carding-rollers completely surround the latter, and are carried round by dogs fixed to chain-wheels running loose on the drum shaft. In a third method, the change mechanism is all on the countershaft a, there being the same arrangement of dogs and chain-wheels as in the previous method, though spur-wheels may be substituted for the chain-wheels.
