Abstract

344,407. Silencing gaseous currents. HEATHER, F., 38, Greenford Road, Sudbury Hill, Harrow, Middlesex. Oct. 30, 1929, No. 33007. [Class 7 (ii).] A number of pairs of elements such as c, d, Figs. 2 and 3, are arranged in series to form with one another and with a surrounding wall, such as a casing f, Fig. 1, a number of expansion chambers a, b. Each element c has a projecting portion i which enters a tubular part h supported by arms g on each part d, and is provided at its periphery with projections e which serve to centre the elements in the casing so as to leave an annular space l, and also as abutments for the parts d. The gases entering at j pass through the annular passage at the small end of element d into a chamber a, whence they enter peripherally through spaces l into chamber b between a pair of elements, and so on to the outlet k. In their passage, the gases are whirled by striking surfaces concave to their path. In a modification, the casing f is formed by cylindrical portions on each element d, the portions touching one another and being soldered, welded, &c. at their abutting edges. In a further modification, the parts i of the elements c are not closed, but are threaded over an axial bolt which serves to hold the elements together, and an intermediate larger expansion chamber is formed by inserting a tubular part between two elements c, d. A number of such silencers may be arranged in parallel, and the gases may escape therefrom in successive blasts produced by varying the number of elements, or the capacities of the expansion chambers.
