485,657. Exhaust-silencers. FOGDEN, F. T., and CHASE, A. A. Oct. 22, 1936, No. 28784. [Class 7 (ii)] A silencer comprises two consecutively-arranged compartments each containing inner and outer chambers separated by an apertured wall extending substantially the length of the compartment, the gases passing from the outer to the inner chamber in the first compartment, and from the inner to the outer chamber in the second compartment. The Figure shows a silencer divided by a partition 6 into two compartments 2, 3 each further divided by apertured cones 4, 5 into primary chambers 2a, 3a and secondary chambers 2b, 3b. The gases enter through branch pipes 7a, 7b to the chamber 2a, then pass through the apertures in the cone 4 to the chamber 2b, through perforations in the partition 6 to the chamber 3a, and thence through the apertures in the cone 5 to the chamber 3b leading by an apertured wall 5a and branch pipes 8a, 8b to the exit pipe. The entry of the gases to the silencer may be tangential, or at some other angle to the axis ; or the inlet and outlet may be adjustable by turning the ends of the casing. The parts are held together by a tie-rod 9 and may be readily detached for cleaning; or they may be formed in halves bolted together. Instead of the cones 4, 5, flat apertured plates inclined to one another may be used. The cones may be ribbed longitudinally or otherwise, and their walls and also those of the casing may be covered with sounddeadening material, or be made double with an interlining of such material. The apertures in the walls may be slots or sawcuts. Two silencers may be used in series or in parallel.
