Abstract

343,167. Road vehicle opening tops. PAGE, G., Claremont, Staines Road, East Bedfont, Middlesex. Nov. 15, 1929, No. 35045. [Class 108 (i).] In vehicles opening roofs of the kind having an outer flexible cover and an inner lining, the outer and inner roof fabrics are both wound on the same spring roller, the spring in the roller being employed only to maintain the fabrics taut, the roller being rotated by means of gearing or chains. In one form the roof aperture 1 is closed by an outer waterproof cover 2 having one end secured to the sliding front crossbar 3 and the other end secured to a spring roller 4 mounted in the rear roof supports and an inner lining 9 carried by the same roller 4 having its free end attached to slidable bar 10 which is connected to crossbar 3 by suitably disposed tension springs 11. Plates 12 secured to crossbar 3 and passing into and through slots 13 in bar 10 guide bar 10 relatively to crossbar 3. A roller 5, preferably tapered to conform to the transverse roof profile, serves to guide cover 2 on to roller 4. Bevel wheels are mounted on the ends of roller 4 and engage bevel wheels carried on the ends of shaft 6 located in the cant rails. Roller 4 is rotated through bevel wheels, carried on a shaft 7 rotated by gear 8 situated at the front of the body, engaging bevel wheels on shafts 6. To facilitate closing the roof, one end of a bend, chain, or the equivalent 14 is connected to each end of the transverse bar 10 and passes through slots in the bar 3 and over pulleys or the like 15 secured to shaft 7. Any desired number of hoopsticks may be located between bar 10 and the fixed transverse member 16 in which roller 5 is mounted, said hoopsticks being connected together by means of lazy tongs or other expansible means.
