[Class 108 (i).] In vehicles adapted to be converted from closed type to open roof type, one end of a flexible cover is mounted on a positively-rotated spring-controlled roller, the other end being connected to a floating cross-bar 4 which is connected by means of a spring device such as spring-controlled lazytongs 4*, to a directly operated front cross-bar 9 the spring roller and the spring device acting in conjunction with one another to maintain the cover taut. In one form, sprocket wheels 5 on the spindle of the spring roller 3 are operated through continuous chains 8, secured to the cross-bar 9. Movement is imparted to the chains by means of a gear 12 on a transverse shaft 7. An alternative mode of operation is to mount freely sprocket wheels 6 on the shaft 7 and to operate the cover by pulling or pushing the bar 4. The roof structure may be furnished with an inner lining preferably secured at one end to a similar spring-controlled roller 14 mounted in the floating front bar 4. The roller 14 may be rotated by toothed wheels, carried on the ends of its spindle and engaging suitably disposed racks or runways secured to the cant rails. The Provisional Specification mentions that the cover may be operated electrically or hydraulically.
